Parents have inquired about purchasing supplies and/or donating supplies for the upcoming year. We know times are challenging and budgets are tight; additionally, we want every student to have their own set of personal supplies. Therefore, we will be providing the following supplies for each student. These supplies will be used for both models.
Families who need the streaming model are encouraged to set up a space at home. If they want to buy supplies, stock them with the list below. Additionally, families who want to donate can purchase these extra materials which will be collected and distributed by the school front office. Please do not feel obligated; we will supply students with what they need to learn.

Dear UESD Families,
As this most unusual and challenging school year comes to a close there’s only one thing to say: Thank you!
Throughout 2020-21 we asked for your assistance on numerous occasions as we were dealing with the fallout and consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic, and you came through for our students and staff regularly. You helped us as we instituted strict mitigation strategies and assisted when we asked that you do everything possible to limit the exposure of you and your children while at home and on vacation. Because of your support, our schools were opened for in-person learning since August, and the spread of COVID-19 in our schools was minimized. This was no small accomplishment, and we cannot thank you enough for your help and cooperation to make that happen.
We ask for your support one more time to help us reopen our schools fully and safely in August. Vaccinations are one more step toward helping keep our schools and community safe and we ask that you help us by getting each eligible family member vaccinated.
Over the summer we will keep in contact with you regarding vaccination opportunities like that being offered at West Point High School on June 1, 2, and 3 for everyone 12 years and older. Sponsored by the Tolleson Union High School District and Fry’s, the clinic will be open from 3:30 p.m.-8 p.m. in the school’s gymnasium. TUHSD officials ask that you used the stadium entrance on Avondale Boulevard to enter the campus. Please check the COVID page on our website and our Facebook page for more information.
Right now, we are planning for a full return in-person learning in August. That of course requires us to have appropriate mitigations and contingency plans. We will keep you up-to-date on preparations for the 2021-22 school year. Like you, we are hopeful for a return to normal. Please watch for updates throughout the summer on this blog and on our social media.
Finally, I want to congratulate all our eighth-graders who will be moving on to high school next year. We are proud of your perseverance and your accomplishments this year. Know that we are immensely proud of you and wish you all the best throughout high school, college and life.

Dear Union Elementary School District Families,
The safety and health of our students and staff has been the top priority of Union Elementary School District since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic more than one year ago. The district’s mitigation efforts have helped us to successfully slow the spread of COVID in our community and to keep our schools open to in-person instruction.
You may have heard that today Governor Doug Ducey and the Arizona Department of Health Services (ADHS) rescinded orders that direct K-12 schools to require masks. Those same orders from ADHS Emergency Measure 2021-02, recommend that schools continue to follow CDC, State and Local Health Guidance and authorizes school districts to continue requiring and enforcing masking.
Therefore, per our re-opening plan and mitigation strategies, Union ESD # 62 will continue to use CDC and Public Health Guidelines to keep our students, staff, and community safe. We will continue to require and enforce masking on all Union ESD#62 property and in all buildings, including transportation. This requirement will remain in place through the end of the school year.
As you are aware, our community continues to have substantial community transmission, see table below.

While the development and distribution of vaccines shows that there is light at the end of this very long tunnel, now is not the time to relax the mitigation measures that have worked so successfully in our schools. We must stop COVID-19 and prevent a resurgence in our community so we can safely return to fully in-person learning this fall.

Dear Union Elementary School District Families,
Spring has sprung and it feels like we may have already jumped into summer! For our school COVID-19 prevention strategies this means a lot of rapid testing because of congestion/runny noses, headaches, and respiratory difficulties brought about by allergies. Unfortunately, these are also COVID symptoms! Thank you for helping us ensure we are keeping COVID out of the schools by having your child or yourself tested when you have the symptoms, and for staying home if symptomatic. Our shared efforts have helped to bring down the number of cases as well as the presence of people testing positive percent within our community. Let’s keep working together to keep it that way by wearing masks in public, staying home if sick, testing if symptomatic, and keeping our distance. These measures have helped us to successfully navigate through the most difficult peaks of the pandemic and they will help carry us through to the finish line.
Union ESD was recently recognized for our effective implementation of CDC guidelines for safely offering an in-person learning model. State Superintendent of Public Instruction Kathy Hoffman visited Hurley Ranch because she had heard of what an effective job our team was doing to keep students and staff safe and healthy.
Current COVID-19 community transmission risk is substantial. Our cases per 100K increased this past week, however, our overall positivity rate remained in the 5% range. We will continue to operate in our hybrid model.

Vaccinations: We now are also thinking ahead to Fall 2021 and starting the new school year. Our hope is to welcome back all students and staff to in-person learning. For that to happen will require one more shared community effort: vaccination. While students under 16 are not currently eligible for vaccinations, all those around them who are 16 and older can and should be vaccinated. At this time, we are not able to host vaccination events; however, we are regularly sharing vaccination events that are open to the community on our Facebook page. Please follow us there and sign-up to arrange a vaccination appointment. If you need assistance, please contact Nurse Roze at 623-594-0970 and she can help you access the resources.
Thank you for all of your efforts to help us prevent the virus from continuing to spread. The vaccine is effective and having everyone get vaccinated is our best hope for returning to fully in-person learning this fall.

Dear Union Families and Staff:
Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey issued an Executive Order yesterday that loosens COVID-19 restrictions in the community. The Order takes away the authority for municipalities (such as the City of Phoenix, City of Tolleson and Maricopa County) to mandate mask-wearing.
It does not, however, rescind the order requiring school districts and charter schools to require mask-wearing. Mask-wearing remains a requirement at all Union Elementary School District schools and offices. We will also continue to observe social distancing and other mitigation steps that have worked so successfully for us this year.
The order that mandates mask-wearing in schools is Executive Order 2020-51 (Arizona: Open for Learning), which states:
All school districts and charter schools shall develop and implement a policy to require face coverings, such as face masks or face shields, for all staff and students over the age of five until the Arizona Department of Health Services determines that face coverings are no longer necessary or recommended to contain the spread of the virus.
Furthermore, the Arizona Department of Education has confirmed that the Arizona Department of Health Services Emergency Measure 2020-04 (Slowing the Spread of COVID-19 in Schools), also remains in place. This order states:
Each school district and charter school shall immediately mandate that masks are worn on school campus, on school buses, during school-associated activities, and while participating in or observing any school-associated athletic activities, by all students, faculty, staff, contractors and visitors.
- Exceptions shall be made for instances when students can socially distance or are outside in playground settings with distancing, and students shall be allowed to take their masks off during breaks and while in a safe environment.
- Students who are engaged in high-intensity activities, like running, shall not be required to wear a mask if it causes difficulty breathing.
- Masks should not be worn by children under the age of 2 or anyone who has trouble breathing, is unconscious, incapacitated, or otherwise unable to remove the mask without assistance.
- School districts and charter schools shall abide by other restrictions and exceptions consistent with guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, including recommendations for those who have sensory, cognitive, or behavioral issues.
In addition, the new Executive Order gives businesses and public entities the right to make rules for face coverings in their own buildings. This permits the District’s face-covering and other mitigation steps to remain in place for school buildings, busses and activities.
Again, the action by the Governor does not change the state requirement for mask-wearing in schools. The Union Elementary School District remains committed to following all health and safety requirements with the goal of keeping our staff and students safe and our classrooms open for learning.
